Woman finds abandoned baby in shopping bag

A 61-year-old woman got a shock when she used a public toilet at a supermarket restaurant in Thun and discovered an abandoned newborn baby there in a shopping bag.

Esther Finger recalled the incident in an interview with Blick published on its website on Friday.

Finger told the tabloid she used a toilet for the disabled at the Strättligen Coop in Thun last Friday and noticed a black bag under the changing table.

“At first I thought someone must have forgotten their purchases,” she said.

“But when I washed my hands I suddenly heard a noise,” Finger said.

“It was a kind of hard-to-describe chuckle or gurgling sound — I thought at first it was an animal.”

She inspected the bag and noticed a towel.

When she lifted up the towel she found herself gazing at a baby’s face, just a few days old, apparently healthy but completely naked.

“I saw at once it was a boy, and on the belly still hung the umbilical chord,” Finger told Blick.

She believes the mother did not give birth to the child in the toilet because there was no sign of blood.

Realizing that it was a foundling, she lifted up the infant and took it with the bag to a cashier at the restaurant.

Police later took the baby and placed it in the care of midwives.

An officer found a letter in the bag but the mother had not been tracked down, Blick said.
