Knocking on the door of Punjab and Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki, Haryana’s all-party delegation (barring the Congress) led by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, today sought the former’s intervention in stalling Punjab’s controversial Bill on de-notifying land acquired for the Satluj-Yamuna Link canal.

The Governor is learnt to have assured the delegation of having it “legally examined” before giving his nod. Earlier, at a meeting attended by all major political parties, a unanimous resolution condemning Punjab’s aggressive posturing was also passed. The Congress chose to stay away from the meeting as also from calling on the Governor.

The various parties including the INLD, the Shiromani Akali Dal (state unit), the BSP and the Haryana Janhit Congress condemned Punjab’s decision of denotifying land in one voice but were divided about reservation to the Jats in Haryana.

Instead of giving any suggestions on the Bill for reservation, the BJP government intends bringing to the Budget session of the Assembly which begins on March 14, the representatives said a discussion was only possible after a draft Bill was prepared. While HJC chief Kuldip Bishnoi favoured reservation on economic basis, Independent MLA Jai Prakash is learnt to insisted that the Jats were given a raw deal when their community was excluded from the OBC list in 1990. This led to an argument between him and BSP MLA Tek Chand Sharma who said that other communities should also be given reservation under OBC category.

Sources maintained that all parties strongly favoured a judicial probe into the arson and violence that followed the Jat agitation and expressed dissatisfaction with the present inquiry. “Everybody was unanimous in stating that a judicial probe is needed to bring out the truth,” a leader said.

Also, the representatives demanded action against Kurukshetra MP Raj Kumar Saini for vitiating the atmosphere which caused the face-off between Jats and non-Jats in Haryana.
