Car2go drives out of Copenhagen after flop

Car sharing concept Car2go has announced it will pull out of Copenhagen after just 17 months due to a lack of interest from users.

Car2go's diminutive blue and white Smart Fortwo vehicles will leave the Danish capital for good on February 15th, the company said in a statement. The cars have gone largely unused during their near year-and-a-half spell in Copenhagen.

“We did not achieve the critical mass we consider necessary to become a viable and solid business in Copenhagen. Unfortunately, the customer ramp-up did not meet our business expectations and therefore we have decided to stop our car sharing activity as from February 2016,” the company wrote in a statement.

“We apologise to our loyal members and business partners for the inconvenience that may occur with the withdrawal of our car sharing activity from the Danish market,” the statement continued.

Car2go is one of the leading car-share organisations worldwide, with over 14,000 cars and 1.1 million members in 30 cities on both sides of the Atlantic, including Amsterdam, Rome, Berlin, Miami, Washington DC and Seattle.

There are currently 8,500 members and 200 cars in Copenhagen, according to Metroxpress.

The company says that its concept, in which members pay for cars at a timed rate which includes gas, insurance and parking, can bring down congestion and CO2 levels in big cities.
